The organisation of football in Zambia is structured around a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Super League, which is the highest level of Zambian football. It comprises 18 professional clubs that compete for the title of Zambian champion. The bottom four clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the National Division One, which also includes 18 clubs. The top four teams from the National Division One are promoted to the Super League.
The National Division One, the second tier of Zambian football, hosts 18 clubs. The top four teams are promoted to the Super League, and the bottom four are relegated to the National Division Two. This tier is subdivided into four groups of 10 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the National Division One and the National Division Three.
The National Division Three, the fourth tier of Zambian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional clubs. Beyond the National Division Three, the system continues with regional and provincial divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Zambian football at all levels of competition.
Tiers 5 to 7 are made up of the Provincial Division One, Provincial Division Two and Provincial Division Three, which are organised by the provincial leagues. Tiers 8 to 10 are made up of the District Division One, District Division Two and District Division Three, which are organised by the provincial districts. Finally, tiers 11 to 15 are made up of local divisions, which are also organised by the provincial districts.
