Organisation of Football in Australia

The organisation of football in Australia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or be relegated based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the A-League, which is the highest level of Australian football. It comprises 12 professional clubs vying for the title of Australian champion. Teams at this level are not subject to relegation.

The second tier, the A-League 2, is currently under development. Once established, it is expected to operate on the principle of promotion and relegation with the A-League.

The third tier of Australian football is made up of the state leagues, of which there are eight. Each state league operates independently and has its own promotion and relegation structure. The champions of each state league then compete for the national title in the National Premier Leagues.

Beyond these first three tiers, the Australian football system continues with a series of regional and local leagues, highlighting the depth and diversity of Australian football at all levels of competition.
