Organisation of Football in China

The organisation of football in China is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Chinese Super League (CSL), which is the highest level of Chinese football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Chinese champions. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the China League One, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the CSL, while the bottom two are relegated to the China League Two.

The China League Two, the third tier, hosts 20 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to China League One, and the bottom two are relegated to the Chinese Champions League. This tier is subdivided into two groups of 10 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with China League One and the Chinese Amateur Football League.

The Chinese Amateur Football League, the fifth tier of Chinese football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Chinese Amateur Football League, the system continues with regional and provincial divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Chinese football at all levels of competition.
