Organisation of Football in Venezuela

The organisation of football in Venezuela is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Primera División, which is the highest level of Venezuelan football. It comprises 20 professional clubs that compete for the title of Venezuelan champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda División, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Primera División, while the bottom three descend to the Segunda División B.

The Segunda División B, the third tier, hosts 10 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Segunda División, and the bottom two are relegated to the Tercera División. This level is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Segunda División B and the regional leagues.

The Tercera División, the fourth tier of Venezuelan football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Tercera División, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Venezuelan football at all levels of competition.
