The organisation of football in the United States is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to move up or down based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the highest level of American football. It comprises 27 professional clubs vying for the title of United States champion. Unlike many other football league systems, there is no relegation to the USL Championship, the second tier of American football.
The USL Championship includes 31 teams, primarily professional. As with the MLS, there is no relegation/promotion system with the lower tier, the USL League One.
The USL League One is the third tier of American football and includes 12 teams. Again, there is no relegation/promotion system with the lower tier, the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA).
The NISA is the fourth tier of American football and includes 10 teams. Beyond the NISA, the system continues with regional and local leagues, highlighting the depth and richness of American football at all levels of competition.
