Organisation of Football in Tanzania

The organisation of football in Tanzania is structured around a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the apex of the hierarchy is the Tanzania Mainland Premier League, which is the highest level of Tanzanian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Tanzanian champion. The bottom three clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the First Division League, which also includes 24 clubs. The top two from the First Division League are promoted to the Tanzania Mainland Premier League, while the bottom three are relegated to the Second Division League.

The Second Division League, the third tier of Tanzanian football, hosts 24 clubs, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the First Division League, and the bottom three are relegated to the Regional League. This tier is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Second Division League.

The Regional League, the fourth tier of Tanzanian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional clubs. Beyond the Regional League, the system continues with local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Tanzanian football at all levels of competition.

The tiers below the Regional League are made up of district leagues, which are organised by local districts. These leagues allow clubs to develop and progress within the Tanzanian league system, with the ultimate goal of joining the Tanzania Mainland Premier League and competing at the highest level of Tanzanian football.
