The organisation of football in Slovenia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Slovenian PrvaLiga, which is the highest level of Slovenian football. It comprises 10 professional clubs vying for the title of Slovenian champions. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Slovenian Second League, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the PrvaLiga, while the bottom three descend to the Slovenian Third League.
The Slovenian Third League, the third tier, is divided into two regional groups (East and West) and mainly hosts semi-professional teams. The top teams from each group are promoted to the Second League, and the bottom teams are relegated to the MNZ Ljubljana or MNZ Maribor, depending on their geographical location.
The MNZ Ljubljana and MNZ Maribor, the fourth tier of Slovenian football, are organised into several regional groups. They include amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond this level, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Slovenian football at all levels of competition.
