Organisation of Football in Norway

The organisation of football in Norway is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to be promoted or relegated based on their performance. This system is divided into several levels, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Eliteserien, which is the highest level of Norwegian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs that compete for the title of Norwegian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the 1. divisjon, also known as the OBOS-ligaen, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Eliteserien, while the bottom four descend to the 2. divisjon.

The 2. divisjon, the third tier, hosts 28 teams, divided into two groups of 14. The top two teams from each group are promoted to the 1. divisjon, and the bottom three from each group are relegated to the 3. divisjon. This level is subdivided into 12 groups of 14 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the 2. divisjon and the 4. divisjon.

The 4. divisjon, the fifth level of Norwegian football, is organised into 24 regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the 4. divisjon, the system continues with regional and county divisions, down to the 14. divisjon, highlighting the depth and richness of Norwegian football at all levels of competition.
