Organisation of Football in Iceland

The organisation of football in Iceland is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from semi-professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Úrvalsdeild karla (Pepsi Max deild), which is the highest level of Icelandic football. It comprises 12 clubs vying for the title of Icelandic champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the 1. deild karla (Inkasso-deild karla), which also includes 12 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Úrvalsdeild karla, while the bottom two descend to the 2. deild karla.

The 2. deild karla, the third tier, hosts 12 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to 1. deild karla, and the bottom two are relegated to the 3. deild karla. This tier is made up of 10 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the 2. deild karla and the 4. deild karla.

The 4. deild karla, the fifth tier of Icelandic football, is organised into two regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from semi-professional outfits. Beyond the 4. deild karla, the system continues with regional divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Icelandic football at all levels of competition.
