Organisation of Football in Guatemala

The organisation of football in Guatemala is structured according to a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala, which is the highest level of Guatemalan football. It comprises 12 professional clubs that compete for the title of Guatemalan champion. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Primera División de Ascenso, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two from the Primera División de Ascenso are promoted to the Liga Nacional, while the bottom three are relegated to the Segunda División de Ascenso.

The Segunda División de Ascenso, the third level of Guatemalan football, hosts 40 clubs, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Primera División de Ascenso, and the bottom four are relegated to the Tercera División de Ascenso. This level is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Segunda División de Ascenso.

The Tercera División de Ascenso, the fourth level of Guatemalan football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional clubs. Beyond the Tercera División de Ascenso, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Guatemalan football at all levels of competition.

The levels below the Tercera División de Ascenso are made up of regional and departmental leagues, organised by the various football federations of the country. These leagues provide a platform for amateur clubs and young talents to develop and progress within the Guatemalan football league system.
