Organisation of Football in Finland

The organisation of football in Finland is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or be relegated based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Veikkausliiga, which is the highest level of Finnish football. It comprises 12 professional clubs vying for the title of Finnish champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Ykkönen, which also includes 10 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Veikkausliiga, while the bottom three descend to the Kakkonen.

The Kakkonen, the third tier, hosts 36 teams, divided into three groups. The top teams from each group are promoted to the Ykkönen, and the bottom teams are relegated to the Kolmonen. This tier is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Kakkonen and the Nelonen.

The Nelonen, the fifth tier of Finnish football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Nelonen, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Finnish football at all levels of competition.
