The organisation of football in Bulgaria is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the First Professional Football League, which is the highest level of Bulgarian football. It comprises 14 professional clubs vying for the title of Bulgarian champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Second Professional Football League, which also includes 14 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the First Professional Football League, while the bottom three descend to the Third Amateur Football League.
The Third Amateur Football League, the third tier, is divided into four regional divisions. The champions of each division are promoted to the Second Professional Football League. Below the Third Amateur Football League, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Bulgarian football at all levels of competition.
