The organisation of football in Angola is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Girabola, which is the highest level of Angolan football. It comprises 16 professional clubs that compete for the title of Angola's champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Gira Angola, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Girabola, while the bottom three descend to the Segundona.
The Segundona, the third tier, hosts 18 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to Gira Angola, and the bottom four are relegated to the Provincial Championship. This level is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Segundona and the Municipal Championship.
The Municipal Championship, the fifth tier of Angolan football, is organised into several municipal groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Municipal Championship, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Angolan football at all levels of competition.
