Organisation of Football in Algeria

The organisation of football in Algeria is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Ligue Professionnelle 1, which is the highest level of Algerian football. It comprises 20 professional clubs that compete for the title of Algerian champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Ligue Professionnelle 2, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Ligue Professionnelle 1, while the bottom three descend to the Championnat National Amateur.

The Championnat National Amateur, the third tier, hosts 48 teams, divided into three groups. The champions of each group are promoted to Ligue Professionnelle 2, and the bottom three from each group are relegated to the Ligue Inter-Régions de football. This level is subdivided into four groups of 16 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Championnat National Amateur and the Ligue Régionale de football.

The Ligue Régionale de football, the fifth level of Algerian football, is organised into 14 regional leagues. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Ligue Régionale de football, the system continues with wilaya divisions, underlining the depth and richness of Algerian football at all levels of competition.
