Organisation of Football in Wales

The organisation of football in Wales is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from semi-professional to amateur football.

At the pinnacle of the hierarchy is the Cymru Premier, which is the highest level of Welsh football. It comprises 12 clubs vying for the title of Welsh champions. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Cymru North and Cymru South, the second-tier divisions. The champions of these two divisions are promoted to the Cymru Premier.

The third tier of Welsh football is made up of regional leagues, notably the Ardal Leagues. These leagues are divided into several divisions, each featuring a number of clubs. The top-ranked teams at the end of the season are promoted to Cymru North or Cymru South, while the lower-ranked teams are relegated to lower tiers.

Tiers 4 to 7 of Welsh football are organised by local football associations and include several regional and local divisions. These tiers primarily host amateur clubs.

Finally, tiers 8 to 15 of Welsh football consist of local leagues, which are primarily composed of amateur and youth clubs. These leagues provide an opportunity for clubs to develop their young players and promote grassroots football.
