Organisation of Football in Switzerland

The organisation of football in Switzerland is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Super League, which is the highest level of Swiss football. It comprises 10 professional clubs that compete for the Swiss championship title. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Challenge League, which also includes 10 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Super League, while the last-placed team descends to the Promotion League.

The Promotion League, the third tier, hosts 16 teams. The champion of this league is promoted to the Challenge League, while the bottom three are relegated to the 1. Liga Classic. This level is subdivided into three groups of 14 clubs each, operating on the same promotion and relegation principle with the Promotion League and the 2. Liga Interregional.

The 2. Liga Interregional, the fifth level of Swiss football, is organised into 5 groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the 2. Liga Interregional, the system continues with regional and cantonal divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Swiss football at all levels of competition.

Tiers 6 to 15 of Swiss football are organised by regional and cantonal associations. These tiers include the 2. Liga, the 3. Liga, the 4. Liga, the 5. Liga and so on up to the 11. Liga. These leagues are primarily composed of amateur clubs and youth clubs.
