Organisation of Football in South Africa

The organisation of football in South Africa is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the pinnacle of the hierarchy is the Premier Soccer League (PSL), which is the highest level of South African football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of South African champion. The least performing teams at the end of the season are relegated to the National First Division (NFD), which also includes 16 clubs. The top-performing teams from this division are promoted to the PSL.

The third tier of South African football is the SAB League, a semi-professional league. It is divided into 52 regional leagues, each consisting of between 12 and 16 teams. The champions of each regional league then compete for a place in the NFD.

Below the SAB League, there are several tiers of amateur football, organised by various regional football associations. These leagues provide local clubs with the opportunity to progress through the league system and potentially join the ranks of professional football.
