Organisation of Football in Russia

The organisation of football in Russia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Russian Premier League, which is the highest level of Russian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Russian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the National Football League, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Premier League, while the bottom four descend to the Professional Football League.

The Professional Football League, the third tier, hosts 64 teams, divided into four geographical zones. The top teams from each zone are promoted to the National Football League, and the bottom teams are relegated to the Amateur Football League. This tier is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Professional Football League and the Regional Football League.

The Regional Football League, the fifth tier of Russian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Regional Football League, the system continues with local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Russian football at all levels of competition.
