Organisation of Football in Romania

The organisation of football in Romania is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Liga I, which is the highest level of Romanian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Romanian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga II, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Liga I, while the bottom three descend to the Liga III.

The Liga III, the third tier, hosts 108 teams, divided into 6 series of 18 teams each. The top teams from each series are promoted to Liga II, and the bottom teams are relegated to the Liga IV. This tier is organised at the county level, with each county in Romania having its own league.

The Liga IV, the fourth tier of Romanian football, is also organised at the county level, with each county in Romania having its own league. The champions of each county league can be promoted to Liga III. Beyond Liga IV, the system continues with the Liga V, which is also organised at the county level.

Finally, the Liga V is the last official level of the Romanian football league system. Like Liga IV, it is organised at the county level. The champions of each county league can be promoted to Liga IV. Beyond Liga V, there are unofficial local leagues, which are not recognised by the Romanian Football Federation.
