Organisation of Football in Nigeria

The organisation of football in Nigeria is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), which is the highest level of Nigerian football. It comprises 20 professional clubs vying for the title of Nigeria's champion. The bottom four teams in the ranking at the end of the season are relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL), which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the NPFL, while the bottom four descend to the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO).

The Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), the third tier, hosts a large number of teams, predominantly semi-professional. The best teams are promoted to the NNL, and the least performing ones are relegated to the Nigeria Nationwide League Two (NLO2). This tier is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the NLO and the Nigeria Nationwide League Three (NLO3).

The Nigeria Nationwide League Three (NLO3), the fifth tier of Nigerian football, is organised into several groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional outfits. Beyond the NLO3, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Nigerian football at all levels of competition.
