Organisation of Football in the Netherlands

The organisation of football in the Netherlands is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Eredivisie, which is the highest level of Dutch football. It comprises 18 professional clubs vying for the title of Dutch champions. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Eerste Divisie, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Eredivisie, while the bottom team is relegated to the Tweede Divisie.

The Tweede Divisie, the third tier, hosts 18 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Eerste Divisie, and the bottom two are relegated to the Derde Divisie. This level is subdivided into two groups of 18 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Tweede Divisie and the Hoofdklasse.

The Hoofdklasse, the fifth level of Dutch football, is organised into four regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Hoofdklasse, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Dutch football at all levels of competition.
