Organisation of Football in Mexico

The organisation of football in Mexico is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Liga MX, which is the highest level of Mexican football. It comprises 18 professional clubs that compete for the title of Mexican champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga de Expansión MX, which also includes 18 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Liga MX, while the bottom three descend to the Liga Premier.

The Liga Premier, the third tier, hosts 40 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to Liga de Expansión MX, and the bottom four are relegated to the Liga TDP. This level is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Liga Premier and the Liga Estatal.

The Liga Estatal, the fifth level of Mexican football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Liga Estatal, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Mexican football at all levels of competition.
