Organisation of Football in Malta

The organisation of football in Malta is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or be relegated based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Maltese Premier League, which is the highest level of Maltese football. It comprises 14 professional clubs that compete for the title of Maltese champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Maltese First Division, which also includes 14 clubs. The top three teams from this division are promoted to the Premier League, while the bottom three descend to the Maltese Second Division.

The Maltese Second Division, the third tier, hosts 14 teams. The top three teams are promoted to the First Division, and the bottom three are relegated to the Maltese Third Division. This tier is made up of 14 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Second Division and the Maltese Fourth Division.

The Maltese Fourth Division, the fifth tier of Maltese football, is organised into two groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Fourth Division, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Maltese football at all levels of competition.
