Organisation of Football in Malaysia

The organisation of football in Malaysia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Malaysia Super League, which is the highest level of Malaysian football. It comprises 12 professional clubs vying for the title of Malaysian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Malaysia Premier League, which also includes 12 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Super League, while the bottom two descend to the Malaysia M3 League.

The Malaysia M3 League, the third tier, hosts 14 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Premier League, and the bottom two are relegated to the Malaysia M4 League. This tier consists of 16 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the M3 League and the Malaysia M5 League.

The Malaysia M5 League, the fifth tier of Malaysian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the M5 League, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Malaysian football at all levels of competition.
