Organisation of Football in Malawi

The organisation of football in Malawi is structured around a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the TNM Super League, which is the highest level of Malawian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs that compete for the title of Malawi champion. The bottom three clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Regional Leagues.

The Regional Leagues, the second tier of Malawian football, are divided into three regional leagues: the Central Region Football League, the Northern Region Football League, and the Southern Region Football League. Each league consists of several clubs, primarily semi-professional. The champions of each league are promoted to the TNM Super League.

Below the Regional Leagues, football in Malawi is organised at the district level, with several district leagues constituting the third tier of Malawian football. These leagues are primarily composed of amateur clubs.

Beyond the third tier, the league system in Malawi is not clearly defined, with a multitude of local and community leagues providing competition opportunities at all levels.
