Organisation of Football in Luxembourg

The organisation of football in Luxembourg is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the National Division, which is the highest level of Luxembourgish football. It comprises 14 clubs that compete for the title of Luxembourg champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Division of Honour, which also includes 14 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the National Division, while the bottom three descend to the 1. Division.

The 1. Division, the third tier, is divided into two series of 14 teams each. The top two teams from each series are promoted to the Division of Honour, and the bottom three from each series are relegated to the 2. Division. This tier is also subdivided into two series of 14 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the 1. Division and the 3. Division.

The 3. Division, the fifth tier of Luxembourgish football, is organised into four series of 12 to 14 clubs. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the 3. Division, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Luxembourgish football at all levels of competition.
