Organisation of Football in Iraq

The organisation of football in Iraq is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Iraqi Premier League, which is the highest level of Iraqi football. It comprises 20 professional clubs vying for the title of Iraq's champion. The least performing teams at the end of the season are relegated to the Iraqi Division One, which also includes a number of clubs. The top-performing teams from this division are promoted to the Premier League.

The Iraqi Division One, the second tier, hosts semi-professional teams. The best teams are promoted to the Premier League, and the least performing ones are relegated to the Iraqi Division Two. This tier is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with Division One and Division Three.

The Iraqi Division Two, the third tier of Iraqi football, is organised into several groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond Division Two, the system continues with other divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Iraqi football at all levels of competition.
