Organisation of Football in Indonesia

The organisation of football in Indonesia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Liga 1, which is the highest level of Indonesian football. It comprises 18 professional clubs vying for the title of Indonesian champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga 2, which also includes 24 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Liga 1, while the bottom four descend to the Liga 3.

The Liga 3, the third tier, is organised into several regional groups. It includes semi-professional and amateur clubs. The top teams from each group are promoted to Liga 2. Below Liga 3, there are several regional and provincial leagues, which constitute the lower levels of Indonesian football.

Beyond these three national tiers, football in Indonesia is organised at the regional and provincial level, with numerous leagues and divisions allowing clubs of all levels to participate in competitive competitions. This highlights the depth and richness of Indonesian football at all levels of competition.
