Organisation of Football in India

The organisation of football in India is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegation based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Indian Super League (ISL), which is the highest level of Indian football. It comprises 11 professional clubs vying for the title of India's champion. The teams in the ISL are not subject to relegation.

The second tier is the I-League, which also includes professional clubs. The top two teams from the I-League are promoted to the ISL, while the bottom two are relegated to the I-League 2nd Division.

The I-League 2nd Division, the third tier, hosts semi-professional and amateur teams. The top two teams are promoted to the I-League, and the bottom two are relegated to the State League Division One.

The State League Division One, the fourth tier of Indian football, is organised by the various state football federations in India. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the State League Division One, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Indian football at all levels of competition.
