Organisation of Football in Hungary

The organisation of football in Hungary is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Nemzeti Bajnokság I, which is the highest level of Hungarian football. It comprises 12 professional clubs vying for the title of Hungarian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Nemzeti Bajnokság II, which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Nemzeti Bajnokság I, while the bottom three descend to the Nemzeti Bajnokság III.

The Nemzeti Bajnokság III, the third tier, hosts 20 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to Nemzeti Bajnokság II, and the bottom four are relegated to the Megyei Bajnokság. This tier is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Nemzeti Bajnokság II and the Megyei I. osztály.

The Megyei I. osztály, the fifth tier of Hungarian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Megyei I. osztály, the system continues with regional and county divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Hungarian football at all levels of competition.
