Organisation of Football in Honduras

The organisation of football in Honduras is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to be promoted or relegated based on their performance. This system is divided into several levels, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras, which is the highest level of Honduran football. It comprises 10 professional clubs that compete for the title of champion of Honduras. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga de Ascenso, which also includes 28 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Liga Nacional, while the bottom teams are relegated to the Liga Mayor.

The Liga Mayor, the third tier, is made up of several regional leagues. The top teams from each league are promoted to the Liga de Ascenso. Below the Liga Mayor, there are other regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Honduran football at all levels of competition.
