Organisation of Football in Gambia

The organisation of football in Gambia is structured around a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the pinnacle of the hierarchy is the GFA League First Division, which is the highest level of Gambian football. It comprises 12 professional clubs that vie for the title of Gambian champion. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the GFA League Second Division, which also includes 12 clubs. The top two clubs from the GFA League Second Division are promoted to the GFA League First Division, while the bottom three are relegated to the GFA League Third Division.

The GFA League Third Division, the third tier of Gambian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional clubs. The top teams are promoted to the GFA League Second Division.

Beyond the GFA League Third Division, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Gambian football at all levels of competition.
