Organisation of Football in El Salvador

The organisation of football in El Salvador is structured into several tiers, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure spans from professional football to amateur levels.

At the apex of the hierarchy is the Primera División, which is the highest level of Salvadoran football. It comprises 12 professional clubs vying for the title of champion of El Salvador. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda División, which also includes 24 clubs. The top two from the Segunda División are promoted to the Primera División, while the bottom three are relegated to the Tercera División.

The Tercera División, the third tier of Salvadoran football, hosts 50 clubs, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Segunda División, and the bottom four are relegated to the Cuarta División. This level is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Tercera División.

The Cuarta División, the fourth tier of Salvadoran football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional clubs. Beyond the Cuarta División, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Salvadoran football at all levels of competition.
