Organisation of Football in Chile

The organisation of football in Chile is structured across several levels, ranging from professional football to amateur football. This hierarchical system allows clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance throughout the season.

The pinnacle of the hierarchy is occupied by the Primera División, which is the highest level of Chilean football. It consists of 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Chilean champion. The bottom three clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Primera B, which also comprises 16 clubs. The top two from the Primera B are promoted to the Primera División, while the bottom three are relegated to the Segunda División Profesional.

The Segunda División Profesional, the third tier of Chilean football, hosts 12 clubs, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Primera B, and the bottom two are relegated to the Tercera División A. This level is made up of 16 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Segunda División Profesional and the Tercera División B.

The Tercera División B, the fifth tier of Chilean football, is organised into two regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional clubs. Beyond the Tercera División B, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Chilean football at all levels of competition.

The 6th to 8th tiers are made up of the Cuarta División, Quinta División and Sexta División, which are organised by regional leagues. The 9th to 11th tiers are made up of the Séptima División, Octava División and Novena División, which are organised by departmental districts. Finally, the 12th to 15th tiers are made up of the Décima División, Undécima División, Duodécima División and Decimotercera División, which are also organised by departmental districts.
