Organisation of Football in Burundi

The organisation of football in Burundi is structured according to a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Primus Ligue, which is the highest level of Burundian football. It comprises 16 professional clubs that compete for the title of Burundi champion. The poorly ranked teams at the end of the season are relegated to the Ligue B, which also includes a number of clubs. The best teams from this division are promoted to the Primus Ligue.

The Ligue B, the second level of Burundian football, hosts semi-professional teams. The best teams are promoted to the Primus Ligue, while the less successful ones are relegated to the Ligue C. This level is composed of several clubs aspiring to move up to Ligue B.

The Ligue C, the third level of Burundian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional formations. Beyond Ligue C, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Burundian football at all levels of competition.
