Organisation of Football in Belgium

The organisation of football in Belgium is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or be relegated based on their performance. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Belgian First Division A, which is the highest level of Belgian football. It comprises 18 professional clubs vying for the title of Belgian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Belgian First Division B, which also includes 8 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the First Division A, while the last-placed team descends to the Belgian National Division 1.

The Belgian National Division 1, the third tier, hosts 16 teams. The top two teams are promoted to the First Division B, and the bottom three are relegated to the Belgian Second Amateur Division. This level is subdivided into three groups of 16 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the National Division 1 and the Belgian Third Amateur Division.

The Belgian Third Amateur Division, the fifth level of Belgian football, is organised into two groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Third Amateur Division, the system continues with provincial divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Belgian football at all levels of competition.
