Organisation of Football in Argentina

The organisation of football in Argentina is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Primera División, which is the highest level of Argentine football. It comprises 26 professional clubs vying for the title of Argentine champion. The bottom four teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Primera B Nacional, which also includes 32 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Primera División, while the bottom four descend to the Primera B Metropolitana.

The Primera B Metropolitana, the third tier, hosts 19 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Primera B Nacional, and the bottom three are relegated to the Primera C Metropolitana. This tier is made up of 20 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Primera B Metropolitana and the Primera D Metropolitana.

The Primera D Metropolitana, the fifth tier of Argentine football, is the last level of the metropolitan league. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Primera D Metropolitana, the system continues with regional and provincial divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Argentine football at all levels of competition.
